This procedure guides on-call managers responding to domestic or family violence concerns involving a participant. It prioritises safety, safeguarding, and trauma-informed responses, and aligns with national NDIS Practice Standards and reportable incident obligations.

When This Procedure Applies

  1. There is a disclosure or suspicion of domestic or family violence involving a participant.
  2. Staff observe indicators of domestic or family violence.
  3. A participant, family member, or third party raises a concern indicating immediate risk.

Immediate Questions the Manager Must Ask

  1. Is the participant safe right now?
  2. Is the alleged perpetrator present or likely to return?
  3. Are there immediate injuries or medical needs?
  4. Are children or other vulnerable people involved?
  5. Has emergency services involvement been considered or initiated?
  6. Does the participant consent to information being shared, where safe to ask?

Immediate Manager Actions

  1. Prioritise participant safety and immediate risk reduction.
  2. Direct staff to contact emergency services where there is immediate danger.
  3. Ensure staff do not confront alleged perpetrators.
  4. Support staff to respond in a calm, trauma-informed manner.
  5. Remain available to coordinate response and escalation.

Escalation Requirements

  1. Escalate immediately to senior management.
  2. Engage safeguarding or specialist supports where available.
  3. Contact emergency services where risk is imminent or ongoing.

NDIS Reporting Considerations

  1.  Assess whether the incident constitutes abuse or neglect under NDIS rules.
  2. Domestic or family violence involving a participant may be a reportable incident.
  3. Ensure reporting timeframes are met where required.

Documentation Requirements

  1. Complete an incident report as soon as practicable.
  2. Document disclosures verbatim where possible.
  3. Record observations, actions taken, and referrals made.

Post-Incident Follow-Up

  1. Confirm ongoing safety arrangements for the participant.
  2. Support referral to specialist domestic or family violence services.
  3. Ensure staff debrief and wellbeing support.
  4. Review support arrangements and risk management strategies.
