Domestic or Family Violence Concerns

This procedure guides on-call managers
responding to domestic or family violence concerns involving a participant. It
prioritises safety, safeguarding, and trauma-informed responses, and aligns
with national NDIS Practice Standards and reportable incident obligations.
When This Procedure Applies
- There is a disclosure or suspicion of
domestic or family violence involving a participant.
- Staff observe indicators of domestic or
family violence.
- A participant, family member, or third
party raises a concern indicating immediate risk.
- Is the participant safe right now?
- Is the alleged perpetrator present or
likely to return?
- Are there immediate injuries or medical
needs?
- Are children or other vulnerable people
involved?
- Has emergency services involvement been
considered or initiated?
- Does the participant consent to information
being shared, where safe to ask?
- Prioritise participant safety and immediate
risk reduction.
- Direct staff to contact emergency services
where there is immediate danger.
- Ensure staff do not confront alleged
perpetrators.
- Support staff to respond in a calm,
trauma-informed manner.
- Remain available to coordinate response and
escalation.
Escalation Requirements
- Escalate immediately to senior management.
- Engage safeguarding or specialist supports
where available.
- Contact emergency services where risk is
imminent or ongoing.
NDIS Reporting Considerations
- Assess whether the incident constitutes
abuse or neglect under NDIS rules.
- Domestic or family violence involving a
participant may be a reportable incident.
- Ensure reporting timeframes are met where
required.
Documentation Requirements
- Complete an incident report as soon as
practicable.
- Document disclosures verbatim where
possible.
- Record observations, actions taken, and
referrals made.
Post-Incident Follow-Up
- Confirm ongoing safety arrangements for the
participant.
- Support referral to specialist domestic or
family violence services.
- Ensure staff debrief and wellbeing support.
- Review support arrangements and risk
management strategies.
